Collagen Protein 101: All the Basics You Need to Know

In the health, fitness, nutrition industry there is a new fad every single day. It’s really hard to distinguish between what is a fad or what is something that is actually good for you. Most of the fad ideas aren’t completely wrong, meaning they have some truth in the value of what they are trying to say, but it’s only a very small component of getting the results they saying the tool or supplement will get you. So today we tackle collagen.

Collagen protein makes about about ⅓ of the bodies protein make-up. Our body naturally produces collagen to help keep our skin healthy and tight, help with clotting of blood, nail strength and reduces joint inflammation.

Supplementing with collagen is important because as we age, our body produces less and less of it. It’s one of the reasons we get more wrinkles and loose skin as we age. The two main amino acids that are important are glycine and proline. These two amino acids combine with the help of vitamin C to create procollagen. So keeping your vitamin C levels up as well is important.

  • Digestive health

    • Keeping a healthy digestive system might be the #1 thing anyone can do to create a fat burning system in the body. This is where we absorb nutrients and minerals.

  • Retaining skin elasticity

    • Although this directly doesn’t cause fat loss, as you lose fat your skin will need to rebound from being stretched and collagen can help this process.

  • Rebuilding joints

    • Joint pain can create high levels of inflammation in the body. Chronic inflammation is one of the worst things for fat loss. If our stress hormones are too high our body can’t overcome the hormone load to be able to process fat loss.

  • Sourced from organic, grass-fed livestock (beef, lamb, pork, etc)

  • Any other ingredients in the protein powder are from organic and GMO-free sources

  • Hydrolyzed for bioavailability

  • Contains a blend of collagen types 1, 2, and 3

  • Need between 10-20g daily but can be as high as 40g depending on deficiencies (weak nails, skin conditions, joint pain, brittle hair)

  • Powder or pill form (as long as they fit the quality requirements above)

  • Use it in a shake, smoothie, mix with other foods

  • Will take a few weeks to see benefits. It is not a quick fix solution for anything, it’s meant to be taken regularly as part of a healthy nutrition routine.
